Ag + Solar

Discover how integrating agriculture and solar can enhance farm productivity and support growing energy needs while preserving farmland for future generations.

Agriculture + Photovoltaics (Solar) = Agrivoltaics

Agrivoltaics integrates solar energy production and agricultural production, including crop or animal production, on the same piece of land. Also known as dual-use solar, agrivoltaics has been emerging as a powerful solution for farmers and ranchers who want to continue farming and raising animals.

This innovative practice first gained traction in the early 2010s in Japan, France, and Germany as researchers and farmers began exploring how solar panels could coexist with crops and livestock. Whereas solar was initially viewed as a trade-off between land for farming and energy production, agrivoltaics has evolved to show that both can thrive together.

In the United States, research into agrivoltaics started to accelerate in the mid-2010s, with pioneering institutions like the University of Arizona and the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL) leading the way. Hundreds of studies have been completed showing how solar installations could be optimized to support both energy generation and agricultural productivity.

As agrivoltaics continues to gain momentum, several leading organizations have developed resources to help farmers and communities explore the benefits of combining agriculture with solar energy. The organizations and linked publications shared alongside this section are leaders in research and education, bridging the gap between solar professionals and farmers to foster collaborative, innovative solutions.

Why choose agrivoltaics?

Enhance Crop Yields

By adopting agrivoltaic systems, farmers can maximize the productivity of their land while simultaneously harnessing solar energy. Agrivoltaics can significantly enhance crop yields by utilizing the shade provided by solar panels. This shade helps reduce heat stress on plants, particularly during the hottest months, leading to better moisture retention in the soil. For many crops, such as leafy greens and certain fruits, this microclimate can create ideal growing conditions, allowing for improved growth rates, even in challenging growing environments. Additionally, the presence of solar panels can help mitigate evaporation, conserving water and making it available for crops.

Studies showing positive impacts on crop yields continue to grow. Check out publications linked under the Leading Orgs and Publications section. Revenue Diversification

One of the significant advantages of agrivoltaics is the potential for revenue diversification. Farmers can generate additional income by producing solar energy alongside their primary agricultural activities, creating a dual-income model that reduces financial risk. By leasing land for solar installations or participating in community solar programs, farmers can earn stable, long-term revenue without sacrificing their farming operations. This supplementary income can provide funds for investments in better technologies, sustainable practices, or expansion of their agricultural endeavors, ultimately contributing to the overall financial resilience of the farm.

Improve Soil Resilience

Integrating solar installations into agricultural landscapes can enhance the resilience of farmland by promoting soil health. The structures of solar panels shield the soil from harsh weather conditions, such as heavy rains and wind, which can lead to topsoil loss. Farmers can integrate cover cropping and soil conservation techniques that enhance soil structure and fertility. Over time, these practices contribute to increased organic matter, promoting healthier soil ecosystems that support crop growth. By integrating solar energy production with soil conservation practices, farmers can preserve soil vitality for future generations.

Biodiversity Support

Solar farms can also play a crucial role in supporting biodiversity by providing habitats for pollinators and beneficial insects. The integration of solar panels in agricultural landscapes can create unique microhabitats that attract a diverse array of wildlife, including bees, butterflies, and other pollinators essential for crop production. By planting flowering plants and native species around and beneath the solar arrays (a practice becoming known as "ecovoltaics"), farmers can foster rich ecosystems that enhance pollination services and improve crop yields. This commitment to biodiversity not only benefits farmers but also contributes to broader environmental health and resilience.

Water Conservation

Agrivoltaics can significantly contribute to water conservation in agricultural settings. The shade provided by solar panels reduces evaporation from the soil, allowing moisture to remain for longer periods. This is particularly beneficial in arid regions or during drought conditions, where water scarcity is a pressing issue. By preserving soil moisture, farmers can optimize irrigation practices, requiring less water to maintain healthy crops. Additionally, agrivoltaic systems can facilitate rainwater harvesting, where rain falling on the solar panels can be directed to irrigation systems or storage, further enhancing water management.

Longer Growing Seasons

The implementation of agrivoltaics can extend the growing seasons for many crops. The unique microclimates created by solar panels provide a protective barrier against extreme weather conditions, such as frost and intense heat. This moderation of temperature can allow for earlier planting in the spring and a later harvest in the fall, effectively lengthening the growing season. Farmers can take advantage of this extended period to grow multiple crop cycles or introduce new varieties that require longer maturation times. Enabled by these adaptive practices, agrivoltaics empowers farmers to increase overall yield and diversify their crop offerings, contributing to greater food security and economic stability.

Revitalize Rural Communities

Solar energy presents a transformative opportunity to revitalize rural communities. By fostering job creation and diversifying income streams, agrivoltaics can reinvigorate local economies and enhance community resilience. The integration of solar technology not only empowers farmers with innovative practices that can boost productivity, but also attracts investments and skilled labor to the region. This shift not only helps to sustain traditional farming but also encourages a culture of sustainability and innovation, making agriculture an attractive and viable career path for the next generation. As farmers adopt these new practices, they strengthen their communities, fostering a sense of pride and unity while contributing to the long-term economic stability of rural areas.
